LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) – New Mexico will start rating teacher preparation programs under a plan announced by Gov. Susana Martinez and leaders of colleges and universities with programs that train educators.
Martinez said Tuesday the first rankings should be released later this year. Schools of education will be scored based on several factors, including whether their teacher graduates helped increase student achievement.
The governor also said there are plans to increase the standards for passing a state examination required to become a teacher.
Public Education Secretary Hanna Skandera said no change in law is needed to revamp the examination or establish report cards with rankings for the state’s six schools of education, which graduate about 1,000 students a year who become teachers.
Administration and college officials developed the initiatives to improve teacher preparation programs.
